Want to think outside the box for Mother's Day? 6 fun experiences to share with Mom

Katharine McPhee is like many mothers 鈥 tangible gifts are less important to her than special time spent with children.

The singer/actress and her husband, Grammy Award-winning composer/producer David Foster 鈥 whose latest tour stops at the Providence Performing Arts Center on Mother鈥檚 Day, May 12 鈥 bring their 3-year-old, Rennie, on the road, and McPhee is always looking for fun activities for their downtime.

鈥淚 like finding my own personal space on the road, and fun things to do with him," she says. "That time is priceless.鈥

Treating your mom to their show for Mother鈥檚 Day will feature a romp through their individual and collective songbooks 鈥 his creations from the movie 鈥淭he Bodyguard,鈥 including 鈥淚 Have Nothing,鈥 which is the song she performed under his coaching on 鈥淎merican Idol,鈥 and her hits from stints in Broadway shows 鈥淪mash鈥 and 鈥淲aitress.鈥 Plus, the pair love to weave storytelling into their shows, bringing the audience into their romance and family life, and talking about the steps McPhee is taking into songwriting, which has long been Foster鈥檚 arena.

Treat Mom with tickets to "An Intimate Evening with David Foster & Katherine McPhee," Sunday, May 12, at Providence Performing Arts Center.

鈥淲e probably do 13 to 14 songs. It鈥檚 like a peek into our living room,鈥 Foster says. 鈥淲e do great together 鈥 we even get into fights on stage! It鈥檚 a nice rhythm.鈥

Need a break?

鈥淭here鈥檚 just so much going on in both our heads,鈥 McPhee chimes in.

Writing, she adds, has been a natural progression for her. And, as Foster has stopped writing as prolifically, he鈥檚 available to help her along.

鈥淢elodies inspire me. Inspiration just comes to me out of the blue,鈥 McPhee says. 鈥淎s I get older, there鈥檚 a little pressure for me to write and be more open.鈥

鈥淭he best stuff comes through you, not from you,鈥 Foster reminds her.

鈥淎n Intimate Evening with David Foster and Katharine McPhee鈥 starts at 7 p.m. For tickets, go to .
